        Q-Switches
        The operation of a laser requires that an external pump source provides energy to the working substance and thus makes electronic transition, and finally generates laser beam. Laser output realizes when laser energy meets the output condition of the laser resonator.

        As shown in the diagram,  laser resonator without Q-Switch gives laser pulse with long pulse duration and low power. Otherwise, laser pulse with short pulse duration and high power can be acquired by utilizing Q-Switch to control the laser pulse output.
        When there is Q-Switch and polarizer in the laser resonator and electric field was applied, the Q-Switch is off, i.e. the beam generated by the working substance can not pass through the Q-Switch. For this reason, there will be no valid oscillation in the resonator, and the energy accumulates. When laser output is needed, Q-Switch is turned on by changing the applied electric field. So the beam passing through the Q-Switch forms valid oscillation, which helps the formerly accumulated energy generate  laser output in a very short time.
        In other words, Q-Switch condenses the common continuous laser energy output to an emitting pulse with very narrow width, thus makes the peak power of the light source be increased by several magnitudes. Nowadays, the most common Q-Switch is Kerr cell and Pockels cell.
